3 Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

Because it can cross the blood-brain barrier, Taurine acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, calming over-excited neurons and neurological symptoms, protecting against glutamate toxicity, and aiding in magnesium intracellular transport. It helps with the absorption of calcium. Taurine is also essential in helping the body form the bile salts sodium taurocholate and sodium taurochenode-oxycholate, which are important for the digestion of fats. Taurine is part of normal adipose tissue regulation in the body.*

  • Provides key component of bile*

What is Taurine?

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is an abundant, free sulfur-containing β-amino acid that is essential in the formation of bile salts, which are important for the digestion of fats and adipose tissue regulation. It can also cross the blood-brain barrier, where it acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. Taurine can calm over-excited neurons and neurological symptoms, protect the body against glutamate toxicity, aid in the intracellular transport of magnesium, and help with the absorption of calcium.

Taurine deficiency has been correlated with abnormalities such as retinal degeneration in the eyes, growth retardation, and cardiac dysfunction [1].

How does Taurine Work?

The best-understood biological function of taurine is its conjugation with bile acids, thereby aiding in healthy digestion and metabolism [1]. Taurine is highly concentrated in the islets of the pancreas and has been shown to stimulate insulin release from beta cells [1].

Taurine also acts as an osmoregulator and neuromodulator in the central nervous system [2]. In ischemic conditions (restricted blood flow/low-oxygen), taurine levels in the brain are elevated, indicating the brain may increase taurine availability when needed to protect neurons [2]. Taurine is not broken down, nor incorporated into any cellular proteins, but it does help regulate ion channels, transporters, and enzymes, leading to modulation of intracellular calcium levels [3].

Clinical studies have shown taurine to have potent antioxidant properties under various pathophysiological conditions, not only in the brain but also in the heart. The fact that taurine accounts for 25% to 50% of the free amino acids in the myocardium is likely related to its work as an antioxidant [3]. Taurine is also involved in the coordination of nerve function, stabilization of cell membranes, detoxification, antioxidant reactions, and modulation of osmotic pressure [1].

What are the Suggested Uses for Taurine?

  • Supports normal digestion and metabolism of fats as a key component of bile
  • Antioxidant activity and neuroprotection for a healthy heart and brain
  • Works as an inhibitory neurotransmitter to promote a calm, relaxed mood
