Description: Aging is a strong risk factor for visual impairment [1]. Maintaining vision correlates with increased independence for America’s rapidly aging population [2,3]. Because it is rich in nerve tissue and small blood vessels, the eye is especially vulnerable to threats from oxidative damage from free radicals. Factors that may potentially impact eye health include sunlight [4], unstable blood sugar [5] and diets low in antioxidants and high in inflammatory foods [6]. VitalEyes™ Complete is a research-based ocular protection formula, strong in antioxidant protection, provided within a comprehensive multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. It was designed according to three well-known large research studies- AREDS [7], AREDS2 [8], and Veteran’s LAST [9] that measured the effects of nutrients and antioxidants on age-related macular degeneration and decreased vision. As nearly 9 out of 10 participants in the second AREDS trial were on a multivitamin in addition to the AREDS formula [8} a combined product is an efficient and cost-effective choice. Choose VitalEyes™ Complete for research-backed eye health support provided within a daily multivitamin.

Ocular Health Support featured in the AREDS studies:

Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is the most prevalent antioxidant in the eye, tissue that is vulnerable to reactive oxygen species. Studies have shown that ascorbic acid may protect the retina from oxidative insults from light [10]. In addition, a higher intake of vitamin C has been associated with a reduced risk of eye disease related to oxidative stress, including neovascular AMD [6,11].

Vitamin E: A potent fat-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E has been shown to reduce the biomarkers of total oxidative stress and inflammation in the body [12]. The dietary intake of alpha tocopherol has been associated with a reduced risk of neovascular AMD [11].

Zinc: An essential trace mineral, zinc aids in bringing vitamin A to the eyes to produce melanin, a protective pigment. Zinc deficiency is associated with impaired vision [11]. Some studies suggest that supplementation with zinc may slow the rate of progression of macular degeneration [7,8]. The current zinc levels in VitalEyes™ Complete reflect the lower doses tested in the AREDS2 trial as effective to support macular health [8].

Lutein and Zeaxanthin isomers: the only three carotenoids found in the macula, these phytonutrients have long been associated with eye health. They are known to act as blue light filters and have antioxidant properties that may aid in macular health protection. When added to the second AREDS trial, an increase of efficacy was seen in slowing progression to advanced AMD [8].

Our current VitalEyes™ formulation features Lutemax® 2020 from OmniActive. Lutemax® 2020 provides lutein and both isomers of zeaxanthin (RR and RS (meso) zeaxanthin) in the 5 to 1 ratio that is found naturally in the diet. Each of these nutrients protects a different area of the macula [14]. Lutemax® 2020 provides the only lutein that has been USP verified. OmniActive is committed to supplying research to back their superior ingredients and multiple clinical studies have shown benefits to eye health, including positive effects on macular health, photo-stress recovery, blue light filtering and visual performance [15].

OmniActive, which provides Lutemax® 2020, takes social responsibility seriously and has initiatives supporting its agricultural provider communities including assured crop buy back and supporting choices that positively impact the environment. They also support the health of the rural communities by partnering with local clinics to support eye health and through several women’s initiatives including addressing sanitation and female hygiene needs and common nutritive issues such as iron deficiency.

Additional Ocular Support:

Antioxidant Support: Mixed carotenoids, selenium, CoQ10, and lipoic acid protect cells from damage from oxidative stress.

Taurine: An amino acid that is found in high amounts in the retina. A deficiency of taurine is associated with degenerative changes in the photoreceptors of the eye [16}.

Bilberry extract: the anthocyanins in bilberry have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies have shown the potential of bilberry to reduce reactive oxygen species threatening neuroreceptors to assist in maintaining normal visual function [17]. The extract also exhibits positive effects on vascular function in ways that may support retinal health [18].

Biologically active B-vitamins: including L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin (B-12), riboflavin 5’ phosphate, and pyridoxal 5’ phosphate. Folate and B-12 support the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for impaired ocular function [19].

Vitamin D-3: low serum vitamin D levels are associated with many health concerns, including ocular function and studies have found associations between low vitamin D intake as well as low vitamin D serum status and a higher incidence of advanced age-related macular degeneration [20,21].

Source Materials: Thiamine mononitrate, niacinamide, pyridoxine HCl, pyridoxal 5’ phosphate, L-methylfolate, biotin, pantothenic acid, taurine, and alpha lipoic acid: synthetic.
