What is L-Phenylalanine?

L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, meaning it cannot be made within the body and so we rely completely on our diet, or supplements, to deliver this necessary nutrient. Once ingested and absorbed, L-phenylalanine is converted to tyrosine. It then follows the catecholamine pathway as a precursor to thyroid hormone, as well as mood-elevating chemicals in the brain such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The L form of phenylalanine, specifically, may help support normal mood and attention. It should not be used with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants, or by patients who have PKU, or hypertension. Activated vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine HCI) has been added to enhance amino acid metabolism.

How does L-Phenylalanine Work?

Insufficient levels or activity of neurotransmitters is a central element to the model of general depression. The synthesis of most neurotransmitters happens within the brain, and for some neurotransmitters, the amount of biochemical precursors present from the diet can influence their rate of synthesis [1]. As phenylalanine is a precursor for neurotransmitter production, it can support the maintenance of a balanced mood [2].

Not only does vitamin B-6 aid in the metabolism of amino acids such as L-phenylalanine, but there is also a substantial body of literature linking the B vitamins with mood. Vitamin B-6 intake has also been positively associated with memory performance. Research indicates vitamin B-6 may act as a catalyzing cofactor in methylation in the central nervous system, thereby influencing cognitive function and mood [3].
