Evening Primrose Oil
Product Code: 00616 Softgel Capsules per Bottle: 180
Each softgel capsule contains:
Evening Primrose Oil (GLA 45 mg) |
500 mg |
Other Ingredients: gelatin, glycerin, purified water
Description: Evening primrose oil is a rich source of the omega-6 fatty acids linoleic acid (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). LA is an essential fatty acid that cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained in foods. GLA is rare in foods, but can be biosynthesized from LA. These fatty acids are the precursors of prostaglandins — physiologically active lipid compounds that have diverse functions including vasodilatation and regulation of the inflammatory response.
Uses: Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are precursor molecules of chemical regulators of inflammatory cell function [1]. These regulators are prostaglandins (PGs) and leukotrienes (LTs), compounds synthesized and released by almost every tissue in the body, as they are involved in many biological functions, including inflammatory and immune processes. Altering the EFA content of the body by supplementing evening primrose oil (EPO) elevates GLA concentrations, resulting in an increase in the 1-series PGs, specifically, PGE1 [1]. It has been suggested that PGE1 has a negative feedback role in chronic inflammation, supporting a healthy inflammatory response, which may aid in joint comfort [1].
Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are often reported to exhibit low plasma levels of EFAs [2]. When GLA levels are low in the body, endogenous production of PGE1 is also diminished, leading to immune dysregulation and dominance of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins (PGE2 and PGF2), which can eventuate in dermatitis (a condition characterized by itching, redness, swelling, and cracking of the skin) [2]. As evening primrose oil is a natural source of both LA and GLA in relatively high concentration, its supplementation can aid in prevention of this imbalance and maintenance of healthy skin.
Source Materials: Evening primrose oil is cold-pressed from evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) seeds. Gelatin is bovine. Glycerin is plant based. All ingredients are non-GMO.
