Cal/Mag 1:2 formula offers a unique double amount of magnesium to address clinical deficiencies of this important mineral. Current research indicates that magnesium is essential for the body’s proper absorption and use of calcium, since it keeps calcium dissolved in the blood. Calcium in the citrate/malate form is one of the most bioavailable forms of calcium. Proper levels of calcium and magnesium are important to maintain healthy bones as well as a healthy heart. In addition, this formula includes essential minerals, zinc, potassium and boron.*

What is Cal/Mag 1:2?

Cal/Mag 1:2 is designed to support bone health, cardiovascular health, nerve signaling, and muscle function. Cal/Mag 1:2 formula offers double the magnesium to calcium ratio that has been recommended by research and health professionals to address typical clinical deficiencies of these important elements [1]. Calcium is provided in its citrate/malate form and magnesium is provided as magnesium citrate. Cal/Mag 1:2 also contains the essential minerals zinc, potassium, and boron.

How does Cal/Mag 1:2 Work?

Calcium is required for the critical metabolic functions of vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion. Calcium is also necessary for maintaining bone strength (as measured by bone mineral density; BMD). When calcium intake is inadequate, the body starts to break down existing bone to maintain calcium levels in the blood. Osteoporosis occurs when the bone is being broken down at a faster rate than it is rebuilt, resulting in decreased BMD [2].

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. It contributes to the maintenance of a normal heartbeat and can help to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease [3]. Magnesium is essential for the absorption of calcium, formation of new bone, and impacts the activity of parathyroid hormone (a regulator of calcium homeostasis) [4]. 60% of the body’s magnesium is stored in bone. Magnesium deficiency can result in reduced BMD as the bone will also be broken down to release stored magnesium for other biological functions.

Zinc has been demonstrated to stimulate bone formation and mineralization and to inhibit bone resorption (breakdown) [5]. Zinc appears to have protective effects on cardiac health. Zinc deficiency has been linked to many forms of heart disease, and replenishing zinc has been shown to improve cardiac function [6].

Potassium is an electrolyte that plays a key role in maintaining a regular heartbeat and normal blood pressure. Potassium citrate supplementation was found to improve calcium balance in older men and women [7].

Boron plays a role in the formation of steroid hormones, such as estradiol, and supports bone health by preventing demineralization [8]. Boron also increases the effectiveness of vitamin D in the body.

What are the Suggested Uses for Cal/Mag 1:2?

  • Support bone health by providing a variety of minerals that contribute to the maintenance of healthy bone mineral density at a ratio supported by research [1].
  • Formula components also support cardiovascular health, nerve signaling, and muscle function.
  • Taken before bed, these minerals can help to calm the body and prepare for sleep.
